Sound Card Guide

Onboard audio has improved dramatically. Here's the honest case for and against a dedicated sound card.

Modern Onboard Audio

High-end motherboards (ASUS ROG, MSI MEG) ship with Realtek ALC4080 or ALC1220 codecs and dedicated audio capacitors. For headphones under $200 and gaming, onboard is typically sufficient.

When to Add a Card

Audiophile headphones (Sennheiser HD800, Beyerdynamic T1) benefit from a dedicated DAC/amp with lower noise floor. Studio monitoring for recording or production. Surround sound processing for home theater setups. Streaming with professional microphone input.

USB vs PCIe

External USB DAC/amp combinations (Topping, SMSL, Schiit) offer excellent audio quality without occupying a PCIe slot and can be used across multiple machines. Internal PCIe sound cards (Creative Sound Blaster AE-9) are preferred for Dolby/DTS surround processing.
