Power Supply Guide

The PSU is the foundation of your build. Get this wrong and everything else is at risk.

Wattage

Calculate your system's expected peak power draw (CPU TDP + GPU TDP + 100-150W for everything else) and add 20% headroom. A Tradecraft Xeon build with an RTX 5070 Ti needs ~600W peak — a 750W unit is fine. An RTX 5090 system needs 1000W minimum, 1200W comfortable.

Efficiency Rating

80+ Bronze is the minimum. 80+ Gold is the sweet spot for value and efficiency. 80+ Platinum and Titanium are for enthusiasts. Higher efficiency = less heat generated by the PSU itself.

Modular vs Non-Modular

Fully modular PSUs let you disconnect unused cables, improving airflow. Semi-modular keeps the essential ATX and CPU cables attached. For any build where airflow or cleanliness matters, go fully modular.

ATX 3.0 and 12VHPWR

If you're using an RTX 5090 or 5080, confirm your PSU supports the 12VHPWR / 16-pin PCIe 5.0 connector or includes a high-quality adapter. ATX 3.0 PSUs handle transient power spikes from GPU boost states better than older specs.

Brand Matters

Corsair RMx, EVGA SuperNOVA, Seasonic, and be quiet! are consistently well-reviewed. Avoid unbranded or unknown-brand PSUs regardless of wattage rating.
