My Buying Experience

This will be my first high end gaming computer.  I am getting this as a Christmas present so the boy and I can play our games.  We are currently using a two year old Dell and are finding it can not support games such as CIV 4.  My expectation is this PC should be able to play my current games:

CIV 4
Call of Duty (most variations)
MS Flight Simulator

as well as function for the upcoming DirectX 11 games of the future.  As configured this PC is somewhat beyond the upper end of my budget.  In searching the net, it would appear I could save money going with Cyberpower or Ibuypower.com.  I am somewhat concerned about some of the very negative responses I've read on the review sites regarding these vendors.  So with that said, here is my current configuration for your review and comment.

Thank you in advance,
Gary

Re: My Buying Experience

I placed my order after reviewing the details with Josef.  For those considering Steatmachines, I will keep you updated on my progress and experience.   I selected Stealthmachines over both Cyberpower.com and Ibuypower.com based on the overwhelming number of negative reviews both on resellerforum.com  and on their own customer feedback web forums.  It seemed like a good 10% of the posts were from angry and disgusted customers.  I did not want to take the chance that I too would have a machine that did not function properly out of the box and would have to explain why at Christmas, our children's new games would not play.  While no company can be perfect all the time, there seemed to be too many quality control issues for my tastes.

Was Stealtmachines the least expensive choice?  The answer is no.  I could have gotten a lower price working with the other two vendors.  That said what good is a low price if the machine does not work or needs to be sent back multiple times to function?  While few of us have money to through away, what price is your time and aggravation worth?  Josef has been very responsive with recommendations to meet both my application and my budget.

So if you are reading this post and are like me, buying a computer for games and recreation, stay tuned and I'll chronicle my experience for you.  So far Stealthmachines has been great to work with and I'm very much looking forward to a fantastic machine!

Regards,
Gary

ps....  It didn't hurt that we have a member of our family named Stealth.

Re: My Buying Experience

Update:

I continue with my positive experiance with Stealthmachines.  As many of you who are buying computers for the holidays know or will soon find out, getting high end graphics cards is quite a challange.  This is especially true with the ATI Radeon 5800 series.  The reason I selected this card is to have a future-proof machine capable of handling DirectX 11 games.  Currently only ATI Radeon offers a DirectX 11 compatible card.

To Josef's credit, he contacted me after receiving my order and indicated he may have difficulty getting a 5800 series card and he offered several choices from NVIDIA.  I asked him to continue trying for the ATI product and the good news is he was successful!  All of my parts are in house and my computer will be ready will in advance of the Christmas holiday.

So for those keeping track, I placed my order on 12/1/09 at 11:31 am EDT.  As of 12/9/09 my parts are now all in (including the hard to get 5800 series ATI video card).  The communication I've had with Josef has been excellent.  I am looking forward to a terrific machine under the tree for the kids.

Re: My Buying Experience

Update 12/16/09

I received word from Josef last night that one of the components failed during test and would need to be replaced.  The replacement part was already ordered and expected to be installed today.  I note this in my update because one of the major reasons I went with Stealthmachines was to reduce the potential for an out of box failure (OBF).  If you review the customer feedback sections of the two large gaming computer providers they are replete with customers complaining about OBF's.

Computers are a collection of parts made by at least a dozen seperate companies put together in a case.  No one company makes all the parts needed to construct a computer, having a good QC program at the point of assembly is critical.  Based on the number of complaints I read, I am left to wonder what if any QC is done by the larger and better known custom gaming computer companies?  I feel this is a tremendous advantage for Stealthmachines.

Once again, the communication has been excellent with my order.  I anticipate receiving the computer mid next week and will continue to update this thread.

Regards,
Gary

Update 12/23/09

Good news.  My new Steath has arrived!  <a day early I may add>  Here are some photos:

Here is how it arrived.

The foam packaging did a nice job protecting the case.

Here is a top down look at the computer.  Note the very large cooling fan.

Here is a front view of the unboxed computer.

I'll update the thread once we get all the games installed and put her through her paces Christmas Day.

Have a happy and safe holiday everyone.

Re: My Buying Experience

So my new Stealth is up and running.  The kids were thrilled  Games are currently being loaded on it as fast as the hard drive can accept data.  The set-up was easy.  We had only one hiccup.  The monitor had to be connected to the video card output.  Josef was kind enough to put the needed adapter in the box so we were able to be operational.  Perhaps for those of you more computer savy, this would have been obvious.  I had hooked the monitor up to the blue monitor input on the back of the computer and it did not function.  After a few moments of total panic we were able to work through it.

A suggestion in the future; put a single page connection instruction sheet in with the parts/disk box.  I will continue to update this thread once we have all the games loaded.  So far, so good! :-)

Have a very Merry Christmas all....

Re: My Buying Experience

Here are some shots of the inside of the build.  Very nice attention to detail with the wiring.

Re: My Buying Experience

Good luck with your order.  Time to update my thread I suppose.  The PC is still running great.  Even though my kids do there best to do it in...  The Stealth keeps on chugging.  I have been very satified with this unit and will be buying my own very shortly.  I had bought this one for the kids use.  CIV 5 is coming and my current PC can't handle the graphics requirements.  So it looks like we will be a two Stealth family shortly.

Re: My Buying Experience

Nice. Yeah, good luck if you end up getting a new system.  I am SO excited about the one that is being built for me right now!  It definitely wasn't cheap, that's for sure!  But I mean, computers and gaming are my passion.  Some people save their money for vacations or concerts or sporting events... I save my money so when the time comes I can buy a big, bad powerful gaming computer!  Plus I have always been the type who is more willing to pay a little bit more now and get a very good quality product than save a little and end up with something that is low-mid quality or has a pretty high risk of failing on me in some way.  So that is why I went all out for my new computer.

Re: My Buying Experience

Thanks bro. I will try.  Not sure if I can do as good of a job as you did but I will try.  Love the pictures you took that show from the time you received your package(s) to when your system was up and running.
